The "Istituto degli Innocenti" (Institutes of the Innocents) in Florence has been working for nearly six centuries to support the family and the child. At the time when it was established, during the first half of the fifteenth century, it was the first institution in the known world devoted exclusively to child care.
The Institute, which became an Institute of Public Assistance and Charity since 1890, it is now managed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Tuscan Region, the Province and the Municipality of Florence, which proceeds to the appointment of a Chairperson.
Today, the Istituto degli Innocenti mainly has two typologies of activities:
a home for the reception of minors;
a home sheltering pregnant women and mothers with children;
a number of day nurseries and supplementary educational services;
Research, documentation and training activities, related to children’s rights. In particular, It carries out documentation, research, analysis and training on different subjects including adoption and foster care; child abuse; children’s participation; migrant and Roma children. In the area of social services and child protection, the Institute works with local and regional authorities, as well as national and international institutions and NGOs.
